Too many times women are the victims of physical, emotional and verbal abuse. While Americans are aware that these horrific acts take place in our own country, in our friends' or even in our own homes, nothing can prepare you for the kinds of abuse that take place in Pakistan.

The 2012 Academy Award winner for Best Documentary Short, Saving Face, centers around two women, Zakia and Rukhsana, who were both victims of acid attacks. Rukhsana is a 25-year old whose in-laws threw both acid and gasoline on her, and then set her on fire. Zakie, 39, filed for divorce from her husband. In turn, he threw acid on her.

The film, which will air on Thursday, March 8, is a “powerful look inside Pakistan society” and will follow these women’s story, along with Dr. Mohammed Jawad, who put his London practice on hold to return to Pakistan to help these women. Jawad is a plastic surgeon whose hope is to help these women move on from these horrific events.

The men who commit these crimes are either never charged or charged minimally for forever physically and emotionally scarring these women. The state does not press significant enough charges for these unimaginable acts, leaving the women who survive these horrific acts forever scared.

Currently, reformers are attempting to tackle these issues and press for a new law which will ensure punishment upon anyone who commits acid attacks, ensuring they will spend life in prison.
